CommonAI appoints us to expand AI ecosystem into Japan

We're helping British engineering organisation CommonAI to expand its collaborative AI ecosystem into Japan.

As a Community Interest Company (CIC), CommonAI brings together businesses, universities, research institutions and public-sector organisations to develop shared foundational AI technologies and inference infrastructure, whilst continuing to compete through their own products, applications, data and expertise. It’s an emerging alternative model to hyperscaler-led AI development.

Japan is an ideal expansion market for CommonAI. The country is investing heavily in strengthening its AI capabilities across manufacturing, infrastructure and other strategically important industries, whilst paying increasing attention to AI sovereignty, technological independence, resilient domestic AI ecosystems and access to AI inference infrastructure.

CommonAI's collaborative model aligns closely with these priorities, enabling organisations to share the infrastructure needed to develop AI while retaining ownership of their intellectual property and control of their data and applications.

To facilitate its expansion into Japan, our Tokyo team is now engaging prospective members and strategic partners of CommonAI across government, academia, finance, infrastructure, manufacturing and other industrial sectors, establishing a high-quality Japanese membership pipeline and strengthening long-term institutional links between the UK's and Japan's AI ecosystems.

Mike Halsall, Co-Founder & Director of CommonAI, says: “As organisations accelerate AI adoption, many are looking for ways to build advanced AI capabilities without bearing the full cost of developing and maintaining the underlying infrastructure. Access to advanced AI infrastructure remains costly and is often concentrated amongst a small number of global providers, while governments and industry are placing greater emphasis on strengthening domestic AI capabilities and creating more resilient AI ecosystems.

“These trends make Japan an ideal market for the collaborative system we’ve developed – and Intralink’s extensive network and specialist knowledge of the Japanese market meant we knew we could trust them with facilitating this exciting and vital expansion.”
