We’ve just run an event to highlight the UK’s leadership in cyber security and online safety to consumer protection regulators and standards bodies from the UK and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
We organised the event on behalf of the UK Government’s Department for Business & Trade (DBT), the UK Office for Product Safety & Standards (OPSS) and the UK Mission to ASEAN. The purpose was to explore ways in which the latest technologies can support the work of regulators, while strengthening trade links between the UK and the ASEAN region – a bloc of 11 Southeast Asian countries.
Consumer protection regulators and standards bodies around the world are racing to stay ahead of the socio-economic risks created by rapid digital innovation. At the same time, they themselves need to harness digital technologies, as traditional approaches to their work become less effective in the face of AI-enabled behaviour and increasing system complexity.
Against this backdrop, five UK innovators presented to the attending regulators: IP Moat, which offers brand protection software for ecommerce; Datambit, a developer of AI-powered deepfake detection solutions; Arqit, which has developed quantum-safe security software; Praeferre, which offers AI-powered cybersecurity; and Netcraft, an internet services and cybersecurity provider.
Following the presentations, the companies’ representatives discussed the practical application of their technologies and potential ways to collaborate with the attending regulators and teams from DBT and OPSS.
Several of the companies are now set to take these discussions forward.
“As the UK government’s national regulator with the responsibility of ensuring that products are safe and meet legal standards, we need smart, future-focused solutions and to collaborate with our fellow regulators, including those in the ASEAN region.
This event formed part of this year’s OPSS International Conference and brought the UK’s leading tech innovators together with UK and ASEAN regulators, enabled by the ASEAN-UK Economic Integration Programme, to explore shared opportunities and challenges as we gear up to operate in a rapidly changing landscape.”
“Nowadays, everything moves quickly in these sectors, so we need to learn from best practice – and for us, the UK offers exactly that. The ASEAN member states that attended this event will go back and talk about the security issues we've explored and will use what we've learnt to develop practical plans for our region.”
“It was great to participate in this event, to present our company to the ecommerce regulators and to build useful connections. Hopefully we can help get something in place to prevent counterfeit listings in online marketplaces worldwide.”
