Do you have experience in working with governments to help promote foreign direct investment?

If so, this might be the role for you.

You’ll be working with our North American client, the Department of Commerce of a major US state on the eastern seaboard with strong Canadian ties.

You’ll be the on-the-ground representative of the investment promotion and trade office, with the overarching goals of 1) attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) from Canada, 2) developing trade between the state and Canadian firms, and 3) promoting awareness of your client’s region in Canada.

You’ll be leading the entire investment cycle – from initial lead generation to outreach, negotiation, closing deals, and account management.

In your day-to-day, you’ll be identifying, meeting, pitching to and gathering crucial feedback from your client’s potential partners in Canada, developing a funnel and fine-tuning the market strategy.

When the time is right, you will arrange for your client to visit Canada – supporting crucial visits from business & governmental delegations. You’ll be their local feet-on-the-street – taking them to meetings with prospective investors and partners and providing a local cultural context to business conversations.

You’ll be working closely with our client and providing them with key progress indicators in the form of meeting notes, reports, and sync calls.

What you'll be doing

  • Working as part of a small team of investment promotion and business development professionals, you’ll also be part of a larger global team of experts in investment attraction, business development and innovation

  • Identifying, contacting, meeting, and communicating client’s value proposition to our client’s target investors, partners and customers

  • Travelling to events and trade shows to identify companies looking for the perfect base to expand into the US market and being an ambassador for our client’s state

  • Supporting the whole overseas investment process from initial lead generation to negotiation and closing deals

  • Providing trade & market entry support services to companies interested in exporting to Canada

  • Leading marketing activities on behalf of our government client in Canada, including webinars, trade show representation and networking events

  • Planning, organizing and executing events with the purpose of attracting foreign direct investment

  • Arranging and supporting visits from government and business delegations

  • Acting as a liaison between the state government and prospective Canadian investors

  • Reporting to clients via regular meeting notes and reports

  • Other related business development and administrative tasks

What you'll need

  • Located in Toronto with all appropriate rights to legally live and work in Canada

  • An outgoing and dynamic approach to work – an enthusiasm for meeting and engaging people

  • Excellent communication skills – to get complex ideas across from clients to customers/investors and vice versa

  • Ability to travel extensively domestically and occasionally to the US

  • An interest in technology, sustainability and international business - to operate within multi-tiered supply chains and with multiple stakeholders

  • Min. 5 years’ experience in government/EDO, investment promotion or trade – to bring your own flair to the job

  • A thorough understanding of the Canadian business environment – to identify the right companies and people to engage

  • Ideally but not essentially, experience in the automotive manufacturing, aerospace, biotechnology, energy or logistics industries– so you can hit the ground running
